I am always thinking about, planning and
making art. Art is an irresistible expression and outpouring of my life.
My paintings are figurative and often of women who exude a certain quiet
confidence and at times a sense of playfulness. I include icons and images of
things around me, or places I have been, ranging from my dogs and my trips
to Paris, London and New York City, to my love of Egyptian iconology.
In many ways my paintings are a diary of
my life, seeking to make a connection between my dreams and reality. I have
found influence through my lifelong study of art, particularly Joan Brown's
visual memoirs and Henri Rousseau's fabricated tales of exotic jungles and wild
animals. My own mother's fondness for the vivid primary colors of European
fashion of her childhood manifests in my use of the bright colors and bold
shapes that often set my work apart from my contemporaries. My intention with
my art is to share the tranquility, introspection and strength I have gained
from my Buddhist practice and I hope my paintings will bring light to those who
see them.
